Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The current study investigated whether late L2 English speakers could achieve real-time sentence processing. We focused on the two English grammatical features that are differently instantiated in L1 Chinese: definiteness and count/mass. Using the visual-world paradigm with eye-tracking, the two groups of L2 English speakers with different lengths of residence in an English-speaking country were tested. Results revealed that L2 speakers, regardless of length of residence in the immersion context, could not use the definiteness information of articles in real time. In contrast, both L2 groups were able to deploy their count/mass knowledge into real-time sentence processing. The results further suggested that the L2 speakers with longer length of residence generated predictions more rapidly and their eye-movement patterns were similar to the native speakers' pattern.
