Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recursion is thought to be an essential property of language. However, the notion of recursion and its role in language have sparked controversy. In this paper we discuss the meaning of 'recursion', and report a series of experiments in Spanish designed to test whether parsing of linguistic structures involves recursive processes. Two structures (embedded PPs in complex NPs, and coordinate NPs) made up of words or pseudowords were tested in a click-detection paradigm. The pattern of RTs to clicks suggests that parsing of both structures (with and without semantic content) involves deferred operations, which suggests syntactic processing may be recursive.
