Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Traditional questionnaire surveys tend to be constrained by logistic difficulties, and the data collected is often limited in amount as well as population, with university students as the main target. Crowdsourcing allows us to collect large samples from a diverse population with relative ease, speed and low cost. We describe questionnaire data on shyness and self-disclosure collected using the crowdsourcing site Lancers (http://www.lancers.jp). An in-person survey conducted with university students replicated portions of the Lancers survey but failed to provide enough data to corroborate other trends because the university students were too homogeneous (e.g., in their use of Twitter). We discuss some of the issues in using crowdsourcing for research purposes and suggest that with appropriate safeguards it is a cost-effective way of collecting data.
