Abstract(in English) A new method which estimates the distance from the preceding vehicle is proposed. This algorithm captures and keeps track of preceding vehicle using a low cost monocular camera image for the purpose of generating easy-to-drive road map based on the distance data. The algorithm is realized by introducing a particle filter each particle represents 3 dimensional state space, that is, x,y and scale. The scale is a newly introduced parameter by which the template matching is performed by changing the size of the template accoding to the scale Possible position x,y of the vehicle in the image space and possible scales are represented by the particles. From the parameter 'scale', the distance from the preceding vehicle can be estimated by assuming time headway of ordinary drivers. Fundmental experiments have been done by using an actual image on the road and some promising results have been obtained.
