Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A survey was conducted on the use of ICT by visually impaired people. Among 304 respondents, 81 used smartphones and 44, tablets. Blind people used cellphones with a higher rate and smartphones and tablets with lower rates than people with low vision. Both blind and low vision users found voice inputting, browsing, and finding current location with smartphones useful. Besides them, object recognition apps were useful for blind users and easy-to-see screens for low vision users. Drawbacks of smartphones to both blind and low vision users are difficulties in inputting from a software keyboard and using touch interface. Low vision users raised only a few problems in using tablets. Blind users hoped for easy-to-use navigation apps and improvements in screen reading functions and low vision users, improvements in screen magnifying and high contrast functions.
