Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study explored how Japanese learners of English understand the verbs of perception in English with reference to visual and auditory verbs. This study aimed at identifying what usages of visual verbs are relatively easy or difficult for Japanese learners. 60 Japanese university students, who participated in this study, were divided into three groups according to their level of proficiency in English. A set of three questionnaires were devised in order to examine (1) their ability to choose the right verb in context, and (2) their sensitivity to or familiarity with the range of polysemous see. Two native speakers of English participated in this study as native informants to set the linguistic norms as regards the appropriateness of each sentence in the questionnaires. The overall results of the study showed that there are common trouble spots, regardless of their level of English proficiency.
