Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The aspect and tense nature of -ru, -ta, -teiru, -teita has been viewed as controversial in previous research due to a considerable overlap in the meaning of these forms. This is also one reason why foreign learners of Japanese tend to misuse them. The current research makes a step towards clarifying this issue from the perspective of their collocating verbs. A corpus-based analysis has revealed that -ru, -ta, -teiru, -teita are primarily differentiated by their aspect (not tense) meaning. Two types of aspect oppositions have been observed, such as progressive (-teiru/-teita) versus non-progressive (-ru/-ta) and explicit perfective (-ta) versus imperfective/perfective (-ru/-teiru/-teita).
