Accurate Control of c-Axis Orientation of FePt, FePd, and CoPt Alloy Thin Films with L1_0 Ordered Structure

Abstract(in English) Thin films with L1_0 structure formed on underlayers of (001)-oriented grains or (001) single-crystal substrates may involve (100) crystal with the c-axis lying in the film plane in addition to (001) crystal with the c-axis perpendicular to the film surface. In the present study, FePt, FePd, and CoPt alloy films are prepared on MgO(001) single-crystal substrates. The c-axis orientation is accurately controlled to be perpendicular to the surface by introducing a thin MgO cap layer on magnetic films with disordered structure prepared by low-temperature deposition at 200℃ and by annealing the samples at 600℃. The lattice of magnetic film is effectively expanded along the in-plane direction through accommodation of the lattice misfits with respect to not only the lower MgO substrate but also the upper MgO cap layer. As a result, the phase transformation preferentially occurs along the perpendicular direction in the MgO/(FePt, FePd, CoPt)/MgO hetero-structures. Furthermore, the introduction of cap layer promotes L1_0 ordering. The order degrees of 10-nm-thick FePt, FePd, and CoPt films without and with a cap layer, (S_, S_), are (0.6, 0.8), (0.6, 0.7), and (0.3, 0.4), respectively. The 10-nm-thick FePt film with a cap layer shows a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a very low in-plane coercivity due to that the film dose not include L1_0(100) crystal and possesses a high order degree.
