Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, I introduce the basic framework of Discourse Politeness Theory (hereafter, DPT) and discuss how this theory can contribute to finding ways to solve problems created by intercultural miscommunications. That is, the transfer of politeness strategies from one's first language to one's second language in actual cross-cultural interaction. I will first review politeness studies of past thirty years, with an emphasis on clearly distinguishing between descriptive and theoretical approaches. Descriptive approaches refer to studies pursuing politeness realizations in various languages and cultures, whereas theoretical approaches refer to studies pursuing a universal theory as a common principle, which systematically explain, interpret, and predict motivations that induce (im)politeness strategies in human interactions in every culture. This theory has been developed based on the results of a series of empirical research, and it attempts to enable researchers to contrast politeness behavior in languages with and without honorifics within the same framework, while minimizing cultural biases. This proposal also aims to broaden politeness research to encompass the concept of relative politeness in addition to absolute politeness studied thus far in the field of pragmatics.
