Abstract(in English) This paper shows the control of the permeability of semiconductors on InP-based photonic platforms. We have achieved the permeability control by using metamaterials. As a practical example, we also report the experimental demonstration of a permeability-controlled waveguide optical modulator. In our paper, we show that a combination of an InP-based optical waveguide and a metamaterial provides a novel functional waveguide whose permeability can be changed with an external voltage signal. Using this variable-permeability waveguide, we have built an optical modulator consisting of an GaInAsP/InP Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Our result shows the possibility of permeability control in integrated photonic devices on InP-based platforms. Controlling permeability in addition to permittivity produces large modulation of the refractive index of semiconductors. This facilitates the manipulation of light and the management of photons, and will bring conventional optical devices into small-sized, high-performance devices for photonic integration.
