100-km Optical-Fiber Transmission by 10-Gb/s Si Mach-Zehnder Modulator Module

Abstract(in English) Transmission performances of packaged 10-Gb/s silicon based Mach-Zehnder modulator are characterized. The I/O sections of the modulator chip are located at longer edge sides for enhanceing modulation bandwidth by using short straight configuration of traveling-wave electrodes. E/E response bandwidth f_<6dB> of 12.1-GHz and E/O response bandwidth f_<6dB> of 15.8-GHz are obtained. A coupling structure between lens and the modulator chip is designed where chip edges and mode-field-convertors attached at chip edges are both angled for low loss and low reflection coupling. Coupling loss lower than 2.0-dB/facet and reflection lower than -31.9-dB are obtained. The packaged modulator is characterized in 100-km single-mode-fiber transmission in comparison to commercialized lithium niobate modulator. Although the sensitivity is lower because of insertion loss difference, good power penalty of 1.2-dB is obtained. Wavelength dependency for C-band is also characterized under the bias control condition and 2.2-dB or lower power penaly are obtained for all wavelength.
