Sound image direction control using dynamic amplitude panning

Abstract(in English) Stereo reproduction is commonly used to present audio information to a listener and to control a sound image position using amplitude panning in the audio-visual system and audio system. However, the stereo reproduction enables accurate sound image localization only in a very narrow listening position, so called sweet spot. In this study, to realize an realistic stereo reproduction system by which the sound image is localized accurately even if even if the listener is located outside the sweet spot. We developed dynamic panning system utilizing a head tracking that controls the amplitude ratio and delay between left and right output signals with respect to a listener's position. Sound image localization experiments were performed to validate the developed system's performance. Experimental results showed that the sound images were localized accurately even when a listener is out of sweet spot.
