Abstract(in English) | It is observed that mobile traffic exponentially increases in recent years. In cellular systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and its advanced system named LTE-Advanced, telecom operators need to introduce more number of small base stations (BSs), which provide small coverage area (a.k.a. small cell), in order to efficiently accommodate much traffic locally generated. In addition, we also should consider introducing new technologies such as three dimensional beamforming (3D-BF) and massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) for further enhancing spectrum efficiency in future cellular systems. It is, however, anticipated that telecom operators may face difficulties to bring out the potential performances of such advanced cellular systems. This is because it will not be easy to select appropriate values for many system parameters including such new technologies for each of many number of BSs including small cell BSs. This will also cause concerns about increase of both operational burden and cost. Thus, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has been studying and standardizing Self-Organizing Networks (SON), which is able to automatically configure and select appropriate values for parameters of BSs. This report introduces self-optimization technologies in SON such as Mobility Robustness Optimization, Mobility Load Balancing, and Coverage & Capacity Optimization, all of which are expected to contribute to improving system performances in terms of handover failures and user throughput. Effectiveness of the technologies are also presented in this report. |
