Improved DV-HOP Based Localization Scheme Using Iterative Learning with RSS Threshold

Abstract(in English) DV-HOP is a well known connectivity-based range-free scheme for localization in wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks. Multi-hop nature of it makes its applicability be suitable only for large-scale localization scenarios. Although there are a large number of published works based on DV-HOP, none of these researches considers prominent error generation of them with small-scale scenarios and there is still a lack of experimental evaluations of them so far. In this paper, we first present experimental analysis of DV-HOP in practical environment and point out the generation of a large amount of error in small-scale network scenarios. Further on the basis of this experimental analysis, we propose an improved localization scheme which iteratively updates the locations of unknown nodes by using both connectivity information and Received Signal Strength (RSS) based distance information. To make our proposed scheme be applicable to both small and large scale networks, we configure the connectivity information using the available RSS measurements and a predefined RSS threshold. Optimal RSS threshold value that minimizes the error for a particular network to be localized is derived as a function of the total number of nodes and the network size. In addition, we propose to use regulated hop-count values to get more precise proximity information among neighbors. Experimental results show that our proposed scheme improves the localization performance of DV-HOP by more than 50% without any extra hardware.
