Performance Modeling for Video Quality over Packet-Based Networks with FEC

Abstract(in English) Recent video streaming services are provided over wired-wireless networks consisting of optical back-bone networks and wireless access networks, in which video streaming servers are placed on the backbone networks, while user terminals are connected to wireless base stations with one-hop wireless link. In this situation, wireless base stations are likely to be the bottleneck of data tranmission for video streaming service due to interference and user mobility. In this paper, we consider the packet recovery performance of forward error correction (FEC) for video streaming services over wired-wireless networks. We show a queueing theoretical approach which enables us to evaluate the effect of packet-level FEC on video-frame quality. A queueing model presented in the paper is such that the system capacity is finite, independent input processes of video traffic and background one are multiplexed, and the service process is governed by a two-state Markov chain. With this model, we show how to derive by Markov analysis performance measures of the video-frame loss probability and frame-level success and loss runs.
