Analysis of Blink Characteristics for Sleepiness Estimation

Abstract(in English) The purpose of our study is the development of graded sleepiness estimation method using only the blink information. In recent years, accidents caused by doze have occurred frequently. In previous study, the doze detection method using ECG has been proposed. However, the accuracy of doze detection for ECG method is relatively low, and it is difficult to detect the early stage of sleepiness. The graded sleepiness cannot be also detected by ECG method. The graded sleepiness estimation provides the continuous monitoring of drive's sleepiness. In previous study, we have developed the real-time doze detection method using the closed eye times of a blink burst and an isolated blink. This method can detect the doze state of the low arousal level by using only blink information. In this study, to develop the graded sleepiness estimation method, we investigate the relationship between the closed eye times of the blink burst and the isolated blink and the rated sleepiness. From experimental results, the closed eye time of blink burst is increases with the rated sleepiness. In addition, the closed eye time of the blink burst is longer than that of the isolated blink.
