Development of Single-Polarization Hollow-Core Rectangular Photonic Bandgap Waveguide with Bragg Cladding

Abstract(in English) Hollow-core optical waveguides possess low attenuation and negligible nonlinearity and have potential applications in high power delivery. However, an air-guiding can not be achieved in standard index-guiding optical waveguide structures based on total internal reflection. In contrast, materials with a periodic structure have the photonic bandgap, in which light can not be guided within certain wavelength ranges, thus light can be confined within a low-index region by the bandgap effect and hollow-core Bragg waveguides with a coaxial periodic cladding and a two-dimensional periodic cladding have been reported. In this paper, based on the polarization properties of the bandgap of periodic stratified dielectric films, hollow-core rectangular photonic bandgap waveguides with the Bragg cladding consisting of alternating layers of low and high refractive indices are designed and a single-polarization hollow-core square photonic bandgap waveguide is proposed with the difference in photonic bandgap between the two polarized waves.
