Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Two type of high performance polarization-maintaining optical fibers have been developed. First one is ultra bend-insensitive PANDA (Polarization-maintaining and absorption-reducing) fiber. As optical networks expand, there are increasing demands of smaller modules for optical communication systems. PANDA fibers are used for connecting optical devices employed in modules for optical communication systems. In order to reduce size of modules, bend insensitive PANDA fibers for much smaller bending radius are required. The developed ultra bend-insensitive PANDA fibers have less than 0.1 dB of bending loss and less than -40 dB of polarization crosstalk at 1550 nm with a winding condition of 7.5 mm-bending radius and 10turns, respectively. Second one is high-birefringent PANDA fiber. The fiber is used for strain and temperature simultaneous measurement sensor systems. The System requires high modal birefringence in order to more clearly separate two polarized signals which propagate along a slow and a fast axes. The high-birefringent PANDA fiber has been developed for the purpose of improvement on measurement accuracy for the optical fiber sensor systems. Modal birefringence of the fiber has realized 10.0×10^<-4>, it is 1.7 times of that of standard PANDA fiber.
