Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Attractive faces rapidly and automatically trigger a greater attention. Previous research has demonstrated that the presentation of attractive faces summoned much spatial attention compared to that of unattractive faces. We investigated the temporal characteristics of visual attention modulated by facial attractiveness, using a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm, in which a number of faces were successively presented in a short time and participants were asked to identify two female faces embedded in multiple male distractor faces. Identification of a second female target (T2) was impaired when a first female target (T1) was attractive, compared to neutral at 320ms SOA (an attentional blink), while that was improved when T1 was attractive compared to neutral or unattractive at 640ms SOA. These findings suggest that facial attractiveness is automatically assessed and modulates temporal attention.
