Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Numerosity judgment, which is one of fundamental cognitive function, includes various processes. The previous studies indicate that there are two processes in numerosity judgments. One is the subitizing process for up to three or four items and counting process for over three or four items. The effects of multisensory integration on such counting processes have not been examined yet, while it has been reported that multisensory integration affects the perceptual and cognitive processing in various stages. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of audio-visual interaction on numerosity judgment using the correspondence between auditory pitch and visual elevation. The results indicated that audio-visual interaction facilitated the subitizing and the counting process. However, visual attention facilitated only the counting process. Thus, the subitizing would reflect different attentional functions from the counting process, while the subitizing might not be completely pre-attentive process. The results also indicated that auditory stimuli could affect both processes of numerosity judgment.
