Application of fictive temperature measurement of optical fibers using B-OTDR technique

Abstract(in English) We propose a nondestructive method for estimating longitudinal distribution of fictive temperature T_f of silica-based optical fibers using a Brillouin-optical time domain reflectometry (B-OTDR) technique. We confirmed that Brillouin frequency shift v_B increases with T_f in Ge-doped single-mode fiber (SMF). A Tf resolution of ±4~±20℃ is expected with this method. This resolution is superior to that obtained with conventional IR or Raman spectroscopy techniques. The proposed method is helpful for optimizing fabrication conditions, reducing the T_f and the Rayleigh scattering loss of silica-based fibers.
