QoS-aware packet chunking method for multimedia communications

Abstract(in English) With the wide spread of smart phones and wireless sensors, the number of small packets (e.g. less than 150bytes) will be drastically increased in the near future. Thus, it can happen that the number of incoming packets is larger than the maximum number of packets the router can handle per second, thereby decreasing network throughput. That is, the network resource cannot be used efficiently. Therefore, network operator will make chunk of these small packets. However, since a waiting time for integration is inevitable, application requirement may not be satisfied. This paper proposes a new packet chunking method to both meet the application requirement and make an efficient use of network resources. The proposed method needs several buffers and then classifies the arrival packets to one of buffer based on their acceptable waiting time. After that, the chunk packet is formed based on the computed weight of each packet to satisfy the application requirements. Through simulation experiments, we have shown that the proposed method attains the excellent performance in a case of the excess traffic and the arrival traffic imbalance among different applications.
