Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Sensory integration theory has been introduced by Jean Ayres, occupational therapist, in the 1960s of America. It was introduced in Japan in the 1980s. Characteristic of sensory integration theory is a neurophysiological understanding of the difficulties in the life of a child with learning disability. In recent years it is not only applied to learning disabled children, but also to developmentally disordered children and adults around the world. Especially the integration, based on active experience, of the three tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive senses is considered important for the development of children in this theory. Therapists and supporters role includes preparing environments where can have fun through experiencing "play". For this play, which aims to promote the development of children, toys and play-ground like equipments in a variety of environments is essential. On this occasion, I would like to present an overview of the sensory integration perspective and rich play environments that promote the children's development.
