Auditory Brain-Computer Interface Using Selective Attention

Abstract(in English) A brain response to external stimuli such as auditory and visual stimuli, recorded as electroencephalography (EEG) is called an event related potential (ERP), which is useful for implimenting brain-computer interfaces (BCI). In particular, BCI using auditory stimuli is applicable to patientis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Focusing on psychophysiological findings where direction selectivily for auditory stimuli appears as ERP, in this paper, we propose a BCI that can detect the direction of attention. In the proposed paradigm, differenct auditory stimuli are present to left and right ears, and the subject's direction (left or right) of attention is detected. To do this, features and a method for classification are developed. Furthermore, we conduct experiments to show that the direction of attention is detectable from EEG recorded in a real environment.
