A development of a smart-device application for environmental sound collection based on crowdsourcing approach

Abstract(in English) In this study, we aimed to construct environmental sound database for various sounds as Wisdom of the crowds. For example, considering environmental noise-pollution problems as a kind of the environmental sound, we need to consider not only signature sound, e.g. car noise and railway noise, but also life-space noise, e.g. festivity noise on streets or in parks. However, daily/widely sound collection is difficult to substantiate by few participant. Therefore, we aimed to measure environmental sound covered a vast area by applying crowdsourcing approach. First, we develop a prototype application which is run on the smart device with Android OS, and then we develop a prototype server system for collection and browsing the collected sound data. Then, we calibrated noise level measured by smart devices and carried out a sound collection experiment for validate an accuracy of sensors on the smart devices. As a result of the experiment, we collected nine hundred minutes of sound data, and analyzed the relationships between the measured noise level and some subjective evaluations.
