Proposal of Power Control Method of Physical Servers in Server Virtualization Environment

Abstract(in English) Recently system operation using server virtualization technology, which unifies multiple systems within virtual machines (VMs) on each physical server, attracts attention in the view of efficient use of equipment, this technology has been considered to introduce to datacenters and other places. Meanwhile, the effect of server virtualization technology is also expected from a viewpoint of power reduction, and technology which adjusts suitable active physical servers according to the system load change during system operation has been proposed. However, current hardware devices technology requires a certain amount of time from power on to be active, and we cannot quickly reserve active physical servers when the physical server resource shortage occurred during system operation. Therefore in this paper, we consider the constraint condition of physical server startup time and define the active physical servers with no VM placed as act-standby servers newly, in addition to the act servers which any VM is placed. We proposed the power control method of physical servers which adaptively changes the number of act-standby servers according to the change of the number of act servers, which caused by the change of total system load. In evaluation, excluding the case when the system load exceeds the performance limits of act physical servers before the standby servers become active, we show that our proposed method keeps system performance reliability and achieves power consumption reduction by adjusting suitable scale of standby physical servers to the scale of active physical servers.
