Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Audio and visual media play a crucial role in our daily lives-not only in securing information, but also in our cultural lives. However, subtitling and equipment of presenting subtitles for hearing-impaired people to enjoy them are insufficient. In this study, the questionnaire and interview researches were conducted with film producers, directors, subtitle creators, deaf and hard-of-hearing people to compare the current conditions of them with regard to subtitles and to consider the issues surrounding subtitling essential for realizing new media experiences. From results, with regard to the creation of subtitles for the hearing-impaired people (which at present cannot be expected to bring much profit from a business perspective), it became clear that some producers of films and televisions, in addition to understanding the significance and the enjoyment of subtitles, are also eager to know their societal effects. Moreover, it was suggested that deaf and hard-of-hearing people, in the same manner as hearing people, do visit movie theaters and enjoy watching movies at movie theaters. Despite their losing opportunities to enjoy Japanese films in the movie theaters, the high expectations of people with hearing impairment for subtitles were revealed.
