A Survey on the Use of Cell Phones, Smartphones, and Tablets among People with Visual Impairments 2013

Abstract(in English) A survey was conducted on the use of ICT by visually impaired people. Among 304 respondents, 246 people used cell phones, 81 smartphones, 44 tablets, and 290 personal computers. People with grade 1 disability used cell phones with a higher rate and, on the contrary, smartphones and tablets with a lower rate compared with people with grade 2 or lower. To ease the use of ICT devices, most people with grade 1 disability used screen reading while as people with grade 2 or lower used screen magnifying, high contrast, magnified fonts along with screen reading. Merits of using smartphones and tablets for people with low vision were maps, train route finders, and legible screens and for blind people object recognition apps. Problems in using smartphones and tablets were difficulty in typing on and operating touchscreens both.
