Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Many requirement-analysis methods, such as a class diagram or a conceptual data modeling approach, are widely used for the upstream phase of information system development. In this phase, software engineers must create a domain model by using natural language in the form provided by a requirement-analysis method developed in English-speaking countries. This paper points out that the western-developed methodologies might reflect the cognitive structure of English, the developer's first language. First, this paper clarifies that the cognitive structure of English is reflected in class diagrams. Concretely, guidelines for the creation of class diagrams are derived from the well-known seven sentence patterns of English. Second, this work clarifies that the conceptual data modeling approach decreases the complexity of a domain model by the limited use of countable nouns and action verbs. Third, this paper shows that the grounded theory approach reflects the subject-prominent language property of English. A topic-prominent language approach is recommended for Japan. Finally, this paper concludes that Japanese engineers should understand the essential cognitive structure of English that lies behind the superficial procedure in each western-originated requirement-analysis method. This would result in a deeper understanding of such methods. |
