Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this lecture we will introduce the new Japanese concept of "character," and discuss translation problems and solutions related to this concept. We will examine four major conclusions, as follows. Firstly, in the Japanese-speaking community, the word "character" has a different meaning from that of the English term, which means "dramatis personae." In Japanese, the word signifies a new concept (more changeable than persona and less changeable than style) related to attributions made toward people. Secondly, in Japanese, and in other languages too, the words a speaker utters vary depending on the speaker's "character" (expresser's character). One characteristic of the Japanese language is that this often holds not only for "Foreigner type characters," but for "Us type characters" too. Thirdly, this gap can be filled to some extent through prosody and vocal qualities. Fourthly, by examining the diversity of relationships between words and "characters," this gap can be even further filled. In Japanese, and in other languages too, the words vary depending not only on the "character" of the speaker ("speaker's character"), but also on the "character" of the person depicted ("referent's character"). Therefore, "characters" can be differentiated in texts other than speech.
