Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of this research is to extract the character regions from color scene images with complex background such as color photographs by using segmentation and character decision techniques. In segmentation method, we propose an improved algorithm of segmentation based on region growing that considers strong edges. In character decision method, we propose an algorithm that is composed of character candidate extraction, maximum gradient difference, and connected component analysis. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we use the quantitative evaluation with ground truth.
