Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Global satellite communication was first developed for TV transmission experiment between Japan and US in 1963, and success of this experiment was led to success of world-wide TV transmission of 1964 Tokyo Olympic games. Author of this paper joined for KDD in 1975, and started his R&D works on digital satellite communications in KDD R&D Labs. Since then, he was deeply involved in the development of digital transmission technology and system, including highly effective forward error correction system based on punctured convolutional coding/Viterbi decoding, suitable for various digital mobile satellite communication systems for INMARSAT. In this paper, historical trend of digital satellite communications development is summarized and author's recollection of R&D works including various field experiments on digital maritime and aeronautical satellite communications is highlighted. Expectation for the future of satellite communications is also mentioned.
