Robotic Service Perspective with Research Fields of Pattern Recognition and Media Understanding (PRMU) and Cloud Networked Robotics(CNR)

Abstract(in English) Robots have three "robotic" functions: sensation, actuation, and intelligent control. Cloud networked robotics is a new research field which creates robotic services enhancing quality of life, supporting human activities, facilitating social participation, etc. It aims at proposing methodology for providing "robotic" services with the robotic functions in objects, such as towns, buildings, cars, wheelchairs, etc., and is based on collaboration and coordination of robots, sensor networks, and smartphones, etc. in cyber-physical systems. Recent price destruction of robots and sensor networks (like Kinects) allows field experimentation on robotic services in conjunction with standardizing robot safety and robotic service coordination, and common-understanding roboethics. Therefore, this paper presents that collaboration of PRMU and CNR members could tackle challenging issues on super-ageing society, because PRMU focuses on pattern recognition, understanding and learning as sensation and intelligent control while CNR the actuation (locomotion, manipulation, and human-robot interaction), ambient intelligence, network platform on robotic service coordination. The paper briefly summarizes the history of PRMU and CNR, and introduces examples of urgent issues: super-ageing society in Japan and EU.
