Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is known that phonological representation during silent reading by native speakers of English includes prosodic representation like lexical stress. This study was conducted to investigate Japanese EFL learners' use of lexical stress information during silent reading and speech production. The use of lexical stress information during silent reading was tested through eye movement measurements. Reading times of four-syllable words with two stressed syllables were compared to reading times of four-syllable words with one stressed syllable. In the production test, participants read English words aloud, and their sound data were rated for correctness of stress position by native speaker of English. As a result, during silent reading the overall reading times of words were significantly long. In the production test, the rating for words with two stressed syllables significantly lower than words with one stressed syllables. Out of the 17 participants, no participant used lexical stress information both during silent reading and production, only 6 participants used such information in either modality. These results suggest the difficulty of use of lexical stress information in both modalities and asymmetry of the use of the information between modalities for Japanese learners of English.
