Temperature dependence of radiation frequencies in terahertz-wave oscillators using Bi-2212 Intrinsic Josephson junctions

Abstract(in English) A terahertz-wave oscillator using Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_<8+δ> intrinsic Josephson junctions whose shape was a rectangular mesa with 78 μm × 138 μm × 1.0 μm acting as a electromagnetic cavity was fabricated, and the temperature dependencies of an I-V characteristic, the radiation power-voltage (P-V) characteristic and the radiation frequency were investigated. Several peaks were observed in the P-V characteristic. Two of the peaks in the high voltage region showed the terahertz radiation due to the cavity resonance with TE_<121> and TE_<111> modes, since the radiation frequencies of 0.646 and 0.497 THz around 38.8 K, respectively were measured at bias points where the peaks corresponding to the modes appeared. Moreover, the radiation frequencies slightly decreased with increasing the effective device temperature in the range from 26 to 44 K. This can be explained by the temperature dependencies of the mode velocity of the Josephson plasma and the in-plane London penetration depth which are based on the 3-D cavity model and the two-fluid model, respectively.
