Services Computing Platform for Developing Augmented Reality Applications

Abstract(in English) This paper describes our new Services Computing Platform for Augmented Reality (AR) applications on Android smartphone or tablet terminals. An important feature of the AR technologies is to add extra information onto the real-world view in order to enhance the user's perception of the place around them beyond reality. In the past, there were daunting obstacles - economic and technical - for implementing AR applications as it requires a video camera, multi-functional sensors, and GPS data. Currently, however, the obstacles are greatly diminishing with the emergence of smartphones and other terminals that are equipped with those functions. In comparison with the conventional AR applications using a built-in camera, in which the field of view is limited to the place where the user actually is, there is no such limitation when using our platform as we utilize world-wide views obtained from Google Street View. It is expected that our new platform, which significantly broadens the scope of usage, will further open up new possibilities by adding various functions and implementing enhanced applications in the future.
