Multi-dimensional modulation and demodulation schemes in coherent optical communication systems

Abstract(in English) In newly-developed coherent optical communication systems, we can employ four-dimensional optical modulation including two-dimensional freedom of polarizations. The most power-efficient modulation format named PS-QPSK has recently been discovered in such four-dimensional space. This paper proposes another novel four-dimensional modulation format, which is more spectrally-efficient than the DP-QPSK format and has the power efficiency same as the DP-QPSK format. Next, we propose a general demodulation algorithm applicable to any four-dimensional modulation formats. Finally, we show that with the increase in the dimension of modulation larger than four, both of the power efficiency and the spectral efficiency can be improved further.
