Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Metallic periodic-structures such as diffraction gratings have an interesting property that causes partial or total absorption of incident light energy. The phenomenon called the surface plasmon resonance absorption is associated with the excitation of surface plasmons on a metal surface and is widely used in applications such as gas sensors and biosensors. In this report we investigate the polarization characteristics of diffracted waves when the surface plasmon resonance absorption is occurred in a metal grating placed in conical mounting where the plane of incidence is not perpendicular to the grooves. The excitation of surface plasmons in conical mounting causes enhancement of the polarization conversion of the diffracted wave. We also discuss the application of the polarization characteristics associated with the surface plasmons excitation to liquid concentration sensors.
