Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Laser displays and laser illuminations have been attracting a lot of interest owing to their excellent characteristics; wide color gamut, high color fidelity, and low-electrical-power consumption compared to conventional systems. These advantages of laser displays/illuminations essentially come from a laser's unique feature as a light source: very high coherence in both temporal and spatial domains. However, this high coherence may cause unwanted interference patterns on images, called "speckle noise." Reduction of speckle noise is a key issue in the further development and utilization of laser displays and illuminations. In this report, experimental results on speckle control by use of high-frequency signal superposition are presented. Speckle contrast of images generated by a red semiconductor laser was measured precisely utilizing the speckle measurement system with a cooled CCD camera and auto-power-level adjustments. By adopting 500MHz signal superposition to the red laser, the speckle contrast values were drastically reduced from 0.9 to 0.2.
