An Efficient Transmission Scheme for C-RAN Fronthaul Link in Future Mobile Networks

Abstract(in English) With emergence of new high capacity mobile devices such as smartphones and data-intensive applications, the rapid growth of mobile data traffic has been widely recognized and reported. In order to meet an increased demand for the capacity, it is effective to introduce spectrally efficient wireless systems, such as LTE (Long Term Evolution), and ICIC (Inter-Cell Interference Coordination) technique which relies upon resource partitioning among different nodes to reduce the inter-cell interference. However, it leads to be a large installation and operation cost. Then, C-RAN (Centralized Radio Access Network) architecture has been proposed, which has the potential ability to reduce network costs due to reductions in civil work and/or electricity costs at local base station sites by centralizing baseband units to the center side. To deploy C-RAN architecture, it is indispensable to enhance the transmission efficiency in optical access systems connecting each base station to the CO (Central office). In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new IQ data compression scheme. The elemental technologies of the scheme are down sampling and non-linear quantization technique. Through the numerical simulation, we have confirmed that the proposed IQ data compression scheme can achieve a compression ratio of 50% with keeping the LTE signal quality degradation less than the allowable value.
