Trends of mobile front-haul to realize future mobile radio access networks

Abstract(in English) First, the overview of the technology trends of LTE-Advanced and future mobile radio access networks (RAN) is described. There are many technologies proposed for the future RAN but we think we can pick up two key concepts common to most of the promising technologies, namely "virtualization of cells" and "virtualization of RAN functions". However, the economical configuration of mobile front-hauls (i.e. the interface between baseband processing units BBUs and many distributed access points APs) is the critical factor to realize the two key concepts. Second, considering the background explained above, the requirements for the mobile front-hauls and the latest activities are described. It is obvious that the throughput of front-haul will be the bottleneck when we try to increase the RAN capacity by utilizing space-division-multiplex with multi-antenna technologies. Therefore we explain it is very important to optimize the function split between BBUs and APs to resolve this bottle neck. Some ideas of optimization are proposed in this paper.
