Probabilistic Store-Carry-Forward Routing based on Terminal Density Estimation

Abstract(in English) In store-carry-forward routing in DTN (Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network) environments, designing efficient routing schemes is one of the most important technical issues. To reduce the number of message copies in mobile ad hoc networks, we propose a probabilistic store-carry-forward routing scheme based on terminal density estimation. In the proposed scheme, each terminal collects information of locations at which it encounters other terminals, and the information is exchanged among terminals. In each terminal, the terminal density distribution of the network is estimated with the location information. When a terminal with a message encounters other terminals, it forwards its copy to them with a forwarding probability determined by the estimated distribution. The proposed scheme utilizes the essence of store-carry-forward routing, where areas with a high terminal density have high capability to deliver messages. Namely, it reduces the number of copies in the network by setting a lower forwarding probability to terminals in higher density areas. With simulation experiments, we evaluate performance of the proposed scheme in terms of mean delivery delay and the number of forwarded message copies.
