Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A new communication system called Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is proposed for disabled people or those who are affected by severe disabling diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Much research has been conducted on applications of Event-Related Potential (ERP) for BCI. Because ERP detects characteristics of Electroencephalograms (EEG) associated with cognitive activity by means of a moving average method, a background activity of EEG are smoothed and can thus be disregarded. On the other hand, we have focused on a variation of EEG including a background activity of EEG through an analysis of the Fractal characteristics of EEG, and approached for BCI using its characteristics. We conducted the experiment assuming a situation in which an electronic wheel chair is operated by use of a display. As a result, within all subjects, a maximum 76% accuracy discrimination rate is obtained with a Least-Square-Analysis method using the Fractal Dimension approach. This result is 20% higher than using the ERP approach.
