Effects of Transmission Delay in a Remote Collaboration Environment

Abstract(in English) An experiment to measure how transmission delay affect shared PC display in a remote collaboration environment was conducted. The remote collaboration environment is developed using multiple high-definition video streaming and 6-channel audio streaming. The experiment involved 60 subjects, four transmission delay condition, two shared PC display system and two transmission delay condition of PC control signal. Through the experiment, we obtained the following findings. (1) Participants' performances became worse with 200 millisecond transmission delay on video streaming, audio streaming and shared PC display. (2) Delay on shared PC display effects on subjective evaluation of delay on video and audio streaming. (3) Delay on shared PC display in remote environment effects on subjective evaluation of delay on the collaboration environment in the other remote environment without PC control response delay.
