Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have already reported water-surface ranging techniques for short-range optical altimeter to be used by seaplanes for their safety landing. So far we could successfully measure the distance (< 10 m) to a stationary water surface with centimeter accuracy. We launched and collimated 1.55μm-wavelength OTDR pulses into the air, and coupled the retro-reflection back into the feeder fiber. In order to apply the technique to wavy surface, we tried to expand the collimeter beam from 2 mmφ to 5 mmφ, and could successfully sence a disturbed water surface in a ultrasonic cleaner basin. We also tried to measure a water-depth by ranging the bottom of the vessel (≦22 cm). We used a commercially available visible laser range-finder of 637 nm wavelength. As pouring water into the vessel, the nominal distance increased due to its refractive index. Resultantly, we could calculate the depth from the nominal distance and the index value (n = 1.33).
