Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Although the mechanism of sentence production is often assumed to be universal, languages investigated so far are typologically quite limited. In this study we examine how VOS sentences in Kaqchikel are produced in using two picture description tasks in which animacy of patient is manipulated. As the result, VOS sentences were produced less often when agent and patient were both human, suggesting that there is a temporal overlap between the processes of those two elements. Based on the result, we hypothesize that VOS sentences in Kaqchikel are not produced incrementally, but the subject is retained until the end of a sentence instead.
