Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The subject NP in an adnominal clauses is often marked by the genitive case-marker in Korean. It is, however, still not clear whether those apparent genitive subjects are true syntactic subjects of adnominal clauses (Sohn, 2004). In this paper, we examined how native speakers of Seoul Korean parse the structure containing genitive subjects from the point of view of prosody-syntax interface. Schafer and Jun (2002) and Utsugi (2013) found that the branching configuration of phrase structure is mapped onto prosodic phrasing in Seoul Korean. We measured pitch-patterns of structures containing nominative subjects, genitive subjects, and possessor NPs. We found that nominative subjects and genitive subjects showed similar pitch-patterns whereas genitive subjects and possessive NPs showed distinct pitch-patterns. These results suggest that genitive subjects are parsed as syntactic subjects in adnominal clauses in Soul Korean.
