Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Turkish has two divergent forms of reflexive pronouns: kendi (self) and kendisi (self-3sg). In the literature, different views are expressed regarding the binding relations of these reflexives. According to Sezer (1979-80), both kendi and kendisi can be bound with either the subject of the embedded clause or the subject of the matrix clause. On the other hand, many researchers point out that kendi is more likely to be bound with the subject of the embedded clause, whereas kendisi can be bound with either the subject of the embedded clause or the subject of the matrix clause. However, these generalizations were derived from a limited number of linguistic analyses or the intuitions of researchers, and Turkish native speakers' reflexive preferences are not attested empirically. To provide evidence for the reflexive interpretation and support existing linguistics analyses in Turkish, we conducted a truth-value-judgment task with 64 Turkish native speakers. The results showed that participants preferred both short-distance and long-distance interpretation for kendi. For kendisi, on the other hand, participants overwhelmingly preferred the long-distance interpretation. These results suggested that the interpretations of reflexives are different in Turkish and that kendi is much freer than kendisi (c.f. Goksel & Kerslake, 2005).
