Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, in conjunction with Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Prime Minister's Office, has set up initiatives for "Global Human Resource Development." Among various measures proposed or under discussion is a suggestion to incorporate TOEFL, or its equivalent, as part of university entrance examination procedures, which has aroused harsh debate regarding if such is a reasonable or meaningful means of ensuring better English language proficiency among college graduates. The authors have various test scores with university students at different proficiency levels, most notably those with Versant English Test, a totally automated test of spoken English, which measures test takers' command or mastery of English in real-time interactive settings. Versant English Test scores are compared against those with Oxford Quick Placement Test, which measures grammar and vocabulary achievements by English learners.
