Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The study analyzes three party conversations with speech rate conversion technology. When speech rate conversion system slows participants' utterances, hearers have a time lag to get speaker's utterance end. Therefore, they need to establish a strategy of turn-taking by controlling the timing to begin their utterances based on visual or acoustic cues among the participants. In order to evaluate speech speed controlled conversations, we have implemented speech rate conversion communication system, and two conditions: slower and normal speed three-party conversations are recorded, transcribed and compared. Participant behaviors were investigated in terms of turn-taking mechanism [6] using transcribed utterances and gazes. It is found that the decrease of 'current-selects-next' techniques is statistically significant in the speech speed control environment. The results indicated that participants with speech rate conversion system utilize particular turn-taking strategy that is different from that of normal speed conversations.
